Progress continues on the Society’s project to preserve and restore the 1918 Southern Railway Depot in Chatham. As previously reported, Phase I of the restoration was completed in May of 2007. This phase involved purchasing and securing the property, demolition of the deteriorated roof, and the installation of a new French tile roof.
Transportation Enhancement grants have been awarded to complete Phase II and Phase III. These phases will provide funds to restore the interior and install the mechanical features of the building. Since the grants require a 20% local match, the Kiwanis Club of Danville donated funds amounting to $66,250 to qualify for the Phase II Grant. Former Senator Charles Hawkins requested two grants from the Department of Historic Resources and these funds plus the donation of materials and in-kind services will generate the match for the Phase III grant. All Transportation Enhancement grants require the sponsorship of the local government and this project could not have been achieved without the continuing support of the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors and the assistance of County administrative personnel.
The site has been cleared and a new entrance is being constructed at this time. Architectural and engineering work is nearing completion and contracts for the interior restoration will be awarded soon.
A grant application for Phase IV funds is being prepared and will be submitted by November 1, 2008. These funds will provide for the purchase of exhibit casework, other furnishings, and for site landscaping.
